About
Helping the people around you rarely takes money or days of your time. Most generosity is free, and it tends to feel good too. People do small, generous things every day, and CasuallyGenerous collects ideas for doing them. Whether you've got a few minutes on your commute, dinner with friends or a hike coming up, adding one small generous act makes your plans a little better. Better for you, and better for the people whose day you brighten.
Why I built this
I built CasuallyGenerous because I kept noticing a gap. Most advice about being generous points you to money or a formal commitment. Those matter, and you'll find the places I'd recommend on the Resources page. But a lot of generosity happens in smaller moments. Being there for your neighbours. Knowing what to do in an emergency. Turning a hike or a pizza night into something that helps someone else. I wanted one place to find ideas for those.
Where the idea comes from
The idea comes from Chris Anderson's Infectious Generosity. His argument is that generosity spreads fastest when it's easy to copy, enjoyable, and doesn't ask for a big sacrifice up front. I'd recommend it to everyone. This site tries to put that into practice, one small idea at a time.
Bigger ways to help
Some help takes money or regular time, and plenty of good organisations already make that easy. I've put together a short list of places I'd recommend. Everything on this site is for the moments in between: small, thoughtful things you can do with your own time, skills and attention.
Who built this
CasuallyGenerous is a small solo side project built by myself, Hanns Niedermark. I am mid-career-change from data and AI work toward climate, conservation and social impact. I am figuring a lot of this out the same way most people reading this are: one small thing at a time. Importantly, this is a fun project I am building for everyone else, as much as myself. I have no ambition to turn this into a business or earn any money from this. This is entirely for sharing ideas and to nudge each other to do more.
More
Read the notes for occasional writing on how this is going, or send a note below if you've got an idea worth adding, a correction, or just want to say hello. I'll need all the ideas, input, feedback and advice I can get to grow this.
Thanks. I'll get back to you.
