Why this matters
Shelters run on very tight budgets and get a lot of donations they can't use. Buying directly off a published wishlist means everything you hand over goes straight into use, with no sorting, storing or disposing of things nobody needed. It's one of the few small purchases where the impact is immediate and specific.
How to do it
Look up a local animal shelter's live wishlist - most publish one on their website or keep an Amazon list. Review what they actually need and, just as importantly, what they explicitly cannot accept. Most places are very clear about this, and ignoring it creates work rather than help.
Common things that get asked for: old towels and blankets, specific food brands, cleaning supplies, newspaper, puppy pads, enrichment toys.
Common things they can't take: opened food, homemade treats, anything with stuffing or small parts that can be swallowed, and often duvets or pillows.
Then go and drop it off in person rather than posting it. You get to see where it goes, and it's a good excuse to ask what else they need or whether they'd want dog walkers.
A note on timing: call ahead or check opening hours for donations specifically, which are often different from general opening hours. And if you're going as a group, don't all crowd in at once - a shelter is a stressful environment for animals already.
