Why this matters
Most people give in one-off bursts when prompted, and small local causes get far less than large national ones. Turning a normal night in into a small collective pot means giving happens without anyone having to make a separate decision to do it - and letting the winners choose where it goes makes people actually think about local causes they'd otherwise never look up.
How to do it
Set a small entry fee per person - a tenner works - that goes into a shared pot. Then run a completely normal quiz night in teams.
Setting it up: - Pull questions from a free quiz site, or better, have each team write one round for the others. Less work for you and usually funnier. - Mix the categories so it isn't dominated by whoever watches the most sport. - Agree the shortlist of causes in advance. Two or three local options, so the winners are choosing rather than researching at 11pm.
The winning team picks which cause the whole pot goes to, and ideally says a sentence about why. That bit is the whole point - it makes people look into something local they'd otherwise scroll past.
Keep the barrier low. If someone can't chip in, they still play. The pot isn't the point of the evening; it's the excuse for it.
Do it quarterly and it becomes a fixture. Some groups keep a running trophy, which is objectively better than a prize.
