Why this matters

Houses that put out a bowl and go out are usually cleared within the first hour, so children who come later - often the youngest, or those whose parents finished work late - find empty bowls the whole way down the street. It's a tiny disappointment that's trivially preventable by anyone already walking around with sweets.

How to do it

If you're out on Halloween anyway - taking kids round, walking home, heading to a party - carry an extra bag of sweets and top up the bowls you pass that have been emptied.

It costs a few pounds and takes no detour.

Practical notes: - Only refill bowls that are clearly out for trick-or-treaters - a decorated house with a bowl by the door. Don't leave sweets at houses that haven't opted in. - Individually wrapped only. Nothing homemade or loose, for obvious reasons. - Include some non-chocolate options. Allergies are common and the nut-free, dairy-free kid usually ends up with very little. - Don't hang around waiting to be seen doing it. Top up and move on.

Related versions if you want to go further: - If you're handing out at your own door, keep a small separate bowl of allergy-safe or non-food items. The Teal Pumpkin idea - a teal-painted pumpkin signalling non-food treats - exists precisely for this. - Leave your porch light on and answer the door properly rather than leaving a bowl. For a lot of kids, the doorstep interaction is the actual fun part. - If you're not participating, turn the light off so kids don't waste a trip.
