Why this matters
Small and immigrant-owned businesses rarely have a marketing budget, so search rankings and review counts are often the only way new customers find them at all. Unhappy customers write reviews far more readily than happy ones, which quietly skews the picture against good places. Thirty minutes of honest reviews can measurably shift what a stranger sees when they search.
How to do it
Pick 3-5 local, independent, or immigrant-owned businesses you have actually used, and write real reviews across whichever platforms they're listed on - Google, TripAdvisor, Yelp, whatever's used where you live.
Think beyond restaurants. Shops, hairdressers, a good property manager, a garage that didn't overcharge you, a physio, a corner shop that stayed open late when you needed it.
What makes a review actually useful: - Be specific. "Great place" does nothing. "They resoled my boots in two days for half what the chain quoted" does a lot. - Name people. If a specific waiter, mechanic or clerk was great, say their name. Owners notice, and it often gets passed on. - Mention accessibility if you noticed it - step-free entry, an accessible bathroom, staff who were patient. That information is genuinely hard to find and someone is searching for it right now. - Add a photo if you have one. Listings with photos get more clicks.
Do it in a café with a friend and it takes half an hour. Only write reviews for places you've genuinely been - fake positive reviews are still fake.
